For more than a decade, the Fringe Supply Co. Field Bag has been a favorite among knitters and makers. Originally designed by Karen Templer as a simple, hardworking project bag, it became known for its sturdy canvas construction, wide-open shape, useful interior pockets, and ability to stand upright while you work.

For years, the Field Bag was primarily available as a beautifully made finished product. Fringe Supply Co. later partnered with Grainline Studio to turn the beloved design into a sewing pattern, making it possible for home sewists to create their own.

In this small-group class, Virginia Whiting will guide you through sewing your own version of this modern maker classic. You’ll work with heavy canvas, French seams, grommets, and thoughtfully selected finishing details to create a durable bag for knitting, crochet, embroidery, or other works in progress.

With only eight students in the class, you’ll receive plenty of individual guidance throughout the construction process.

Learn and Make

Virginia will guide you through each step of creating your Field Bag, including:

  • Cutting and marking heavy canvas
  • Sewing clean, durable French seams
  • Working with multiple layers of canvas
  • Setting grommets
  • Adding cotton webbing or leather handles
  • Installing the drawstring
  • Completing the bag with professional finishing details

You’ll leave with a completed Field Bag and greater confidence working with sturdy fabrics and structured bag construction.
