{2/5} Festival Friday: Candlemas — A Celebration of Light
Friday, February 5 | 1:00–3:00 PM
Community Gathering • Ages 6+ • $5 per Child
As winter slowly begins to give way to spring, Candlemas invites us to celebrate the returning light and the warmth we carry within.
Join us for our February Festival Friday as we explore the Waldorf tradition of Candlemas. We'll gather for a seasonal story before rolling our own beeswax candles and decorating them with colorful modeling beeswax. Children will shape small flowers, stars, and other designs, creating a beautiful candle to bring home.
Traditionally celebrated in early February, Candlemas falls midway between the winter solstice and spring equinox—a gentle reminder that even in the coldest months, the days are growing longer and spring is on its way.
What Is Candlemas?
Celebrated on February 2, Candlemas has its roots in the Christian tradition of blessing candles and celebrating light. Over time, it has also become associated with the changing seasons and the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox.
In Waldorf communities, Candlemas is often celebrated through candle making, storytelling, and simple traditions that honor the returning light. It's a time to notice the subtle signs of spring, even while the world around us is still resting in winter.
Festival Friday is our monthly gathering inspired by Waldorf seasonal traditions. Each gathering includes a story and a simple, meaningful craft that connects children with the rhythms of nature and the changing seasons.
