Workshop Description
This immersive workshop explores hand papermaking as it has been traditionally practiced in Europe and the Americas for over 600 years. Rooted in craft history and refined studio practice, the class emphasizes creating paper that is both beautiful and functional—well suited for printing, bookmaking, drawing, and painting.
Using professional papermaking equipment and high-quality fiber, participants will learn how western papermaking evolved over the centuries and gain hands-on experience producing sheets with consistent weight, strength, and surface quality. Special attention is given to making paper that reliably supports other artistic processes, making this class especially valuable for book artists, printers, and studio artists.
This is a process-rich, material-focused workshop that balances historical context with practical skill-building.
Instructor
Rob Buchert
Rob Buchert has been making paper for over 32 years, originally to support the books he publishes through his studio, Tryst Press. His papermaking practice led to a deep interest in the tools of the craft, and today both his handmade papers and papermaking tools can be found in public and private collections and studios around the world. Rob brings a rare depth of experience, combining historical knowledge with decades of hands-on studio work.
