Bits of ribbon, old book pages, handwritten notes, scraps of fabric, pressed flowers, receipts, and postcards—junk journaling turns everyday odds and ends into layered pages filled with memory, texture, and storytelling.
During this introductory Folkcraft Social, Katelyn Maeser will welcome participants into the creative world of junk journaling while sharing techniques for collecting, layering, organizing, and building meaningful pages from found and gathered materials.
Katelyn has been junk journaling for several years and loves the way the practice brings together memory keeping, collage, paper arts, and creative play. Participants will spend the evening creating pages together while exploring different materials, styles, and approaches to building a journal that feels personal and beautifully imperfect.
Whether you’re a longtime paper lover or completely new to journaling and collage, this gathering is designed to be welcoming, relaxed, and creatively inspiring.
What You’ll Explore
During the evening, Katelyn will introduce:
- The basics of junk journaling
- Simple collage and page-composition techniques
- How to layer paper, fabric, ephemera, and found materials
- Ways to collect and organize journaling supplies
- Tips for creating visually interesting journal spreads
- How to add pockets, tags, envelopes, and interactive elements
- Ways to develop a journaling practice rooted in creativity and storytelling
What You’ll Make
Participants will create several junk-journal pages and begin developing layered spreads using an assortment of papers, ephemera, fabric scraps, collage elements, and found materials.
The goal is not to complete an entire journal during the social, but to leave with a finished page, foundational techniques, new ideas, and the confidence to continue working independently.

- Two hours of relaxed, community-centered creative time
The journal itself is not included.
What to Bring
Please bring your own journal or book to work in. This may be a handmade journal, sketchbook, notebook, altered book, or another suitable surface. Journals may also be available to purchase from the Handcraft Revival market before the social begins.
You’re welcome to bring personal materials to incorporate into your pages, such as:
- Photographs or photocopies
- Letters, recipes, or handwritten notes
- Ticket stubs and travel papers
- Magazine clippings
- Fabric scraps and ribbon
- Old cards and envelopes
- Pressed flowers
- Small pieces of meaningful ephemera
Please make copies of anything irreplaceable before cutting or attaching it to your journal.
Continue with Junk Journaling Club
After the introductory Folkcraft Social, you’re invited to continue creating at our monthly Junk Journaling Club.
The club meets on the second Saturday of each month from 1:00–3:00 PM. It is an independent gathering rather than a formal class: participants bring their own journals, work at their own pace, and enjoy access to Handcraft Revival’s shared junk-journaling supplies.
Club registration is $5 for a single meeting or $16 for a flexible four-visit pass. Four-visit passes are valid for six months, and unused visits may roll over into the next seasonal session.
The introductory social is not required to attend the club, but it is a wonderful place to begin if you would like guidance and help developing the foundational skills to work independently.
Additional Notes
- Registration is required, and space is limited.
- Please bring your own journal or purchase one from the shop before the gathering begins.
- Shared tools and collage materials are provided for use during the social.
- Participants under 16 should attend with an adult.
- Guests may park directly behind the Handcraft Revival building or along the street. Please do not park in neighboring parking spaces or residential parking areas along the alley.
- Cancellations made at least one week before the event are eligible for store credit. Within one week of the event, registrations may be transferred to another participant but are nonrefundable.
Pairs well with
Class registrations are nonrefundable.
If you cancel at least one week before the class, we will issue store credit for the amount paid.
If you cancel within one week of the class, we cannot offer a refund or store credit, but you may transfer your registration to another person.
Please contact Handcraft Revival as soon as possible if you need to cancel or transfer your seat.
If Handcraft Revival cancels a class or event, you may choose between a full refund and store credit.
Street parking is available around the shop. Please allow a few extra minutes to find parking and arrive before class begins.
CLASS FAQs
Do I need prior experience?
Most classes are beginner-friendly unless the listing says otherwise. Each class page includes information about the intended skill level and any experience you’ll need.
What is included with registration?
Each listing explains which materials and tools are included. If you need to bring anything or purchase additional supplies, that information will be clearly noted.
What ages can attend?
Age guidelines vary by class and are listed in the class details. Some adult classes welcome younger participants when accompanied by a registered adult. Please contact us before registering if you’re unsure whether a class is a good fit.
How do I register?
Advance registration is required unless the event is specifically described as a drop-in gathering. Your seat is reserved once checkout is complete and you receive a confirmation email.
Can I register more than one person?
Yes. Please purchase one seat for each participant unless the listing states otherwise. When possible, include each participant’s name during booking.
What happens if Handcraft Revival cancels a class?
If we need to cancel a class, all registered participants will be contacted directly and offered a refund or store credit.
What if a class does not meet minimum enrollment?
Handcraft Revival and the instructor will decide together whether to proceed. If the class is canceled, registered participants will be contacted directly.
Where should I park?
Street parking is available around the shop. Please allow a few extra minutes to find parking and arrive before class begins.
What if I arrive late?
Please arrive a few minutes early so class can begin on time. If you’re running late, contact the shop when possible. Because many classes begin with important demonstrations or safety information, we may not always be able to restart missed instruction.
Are classes accessible?
Yes. We want our classes to be as welcoming and accessible as possible. Handcraft Revival has a ramp at the entrance and an accessible restroom. If you have any other mobility, sensory, learning, or accommodation needs, please contact us before class so we can discuss how best to support your participation.
Can I bring food or drinks?
Covered drinks are welcome unless a class listing says otherwise. For longer classes, the listing will let you know whether to bring a snack or meal.
Photos and short video clips may be taken during class for Handcraft Revival’s social media and marketing. If you or your child prefer not to be photographed, please let us know at arrival. We are happy to accommodate your preference.
