Taught by Melissa Mott
Step into the world of old-fashioned soda counters, homemade root beer, and vintage summer treats in this immersive hands-on summer camp at Handcraft Revival in Salt Lake City.
Throughout the day, campers will explore the sights, scents, flavors, and traditions behind homemade sodas while creating their very own soda “brand” from start to finish.
We’ll begin by exploring classic soda ingredients like sassafras, wintergreen, ginger, citrus peel, vanilla, and spices — learning how traditional sodas were once flavored using roots, herbs, and botanicals from nature. Campers will smell, taste, sketch, and experiment with flavor inspiration before designing their own soda labels, packaging, and vintage-style soda shop graphics.
Using watercolor, stamps, foam board printing, and beginner-friendly rubber stamp carving techniques, campers will create custom soda labels, logos, and printed designs before decorating their own soda carrier to use during the root beer brewing portion of camp.
After a snack break and outdoor walk, we’ll return to the workshop to brew naturally fermented root beer together using traditional methods and real ingredients. Campers will bottle their soda in swing-top bottles, apply their handmade labels, and package everything into their decorated carriers to take home.
This camp blends craft, creativity, food history, fermentation, design, and summer nostalgia into a memorable folkcraft experience perfect for curious makers and old souls alike.
