A Utah Pioneer Day Community Event at Handcraft Revival
Celebrate Utah’s Pioneer Day with an afternoon of traditional handcrafts, old-fashioned skills, and community making.
Inspired by the resourcefulness and creativity of early handmade traditions in Utah, our Pioneer Day Folkcraft Fair invites families and makers of all ages to spend the afternoon crafting, exploring, and learning together through a collection of drop-in folkcraft activities.
Throughout the afternoon, guests can wander between stations featuring simple heritage-inspired projects — from jump rope making and candle dipping to punched tin lanterns, botanical dyeing, and traditional fiber crafts. The atmosphere will feel a bit like an old summer community gathering: relaxed, hands-on, and full of opportunities to make something useful and beautiful with your own hands.
Participants may purchase individual craft experiences throughout the afternoon or choose a Folkcraft Pass to enjoy all standard stations at a discounted rate.

Pioneer Day Activities
Jump Rope Making
Create your own handmade jump rope using colorful cotton rope and traditional rope-finishing techniques.
Tin Can Lanterns
Design punched tin lanterns inspired by old porch lights and summer evenings.
Mini Candle Dipping
Try the timeless process of hand-dipped beeswax candles with a miniature taper project perfect for beginners.
Make Your Own Wooden Spool Knitter
Create and decorate your own wooden spool knitter inspired by traditional handcraft tools once used to make cords, trims, and simple knitted projects by hand.
Participants will personalize their spool knitter, learn the basics of spool knitting, and begin their very first knitted cord to take home.
Open Botanical Dye Vat
Bring natural fiber items from home or purchase textiles from the shop to dip into our communal botanical dye vat.
Colors and plant materials may vary depending on seasonal dye plants available at the time of the event. Staff will be available throughout the afternoon to help with simple folding and resist techniques.
Natural fibers only — cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or wool recommended.
Free Community Activities
Pioneer Chalk Quilt — Free
Help us create a giant collaborative sidewalk chalk “quilt” throughout the afternoon using tape, color, and traditional-inspired patchwork designs.
As sections of tape are removed, the sidewalk slowly transforms into a large community artwork inspired by quilting, folk art, and Pioneer Day traditions.
Pioneer Toy Table — Free
Create and play with simple old-fashioned button whirligigs (also called button buzzers or buzz saw toys) inspired by handmade pioneer-era toys.
