Learn to knit the way many children do in a Waldorf first-grade classroom!

Jennifer and Melissa will guide students through the foundational steps of knitting using the gentle, story-rich methods commonly found in Waldorf education. Jennifer will also share why knitting is traditionally introduced in the early grades and how it supports focus, coordination, confidence, and creative thinking.

You’ll Learn

  • How knitting is introduced to first graders in Waldorf education
  • How to cast on and work the basic knit stitch (casting on taught at the end)
  • Simple, child-friendly language and techniques for teaching knitting
  • How handwork can support a child’s development
  • How to turn a knitted square into a small cat or bunny

Each student will begin knitting a square that can be transformed into either a cat or a bunny. You may not complete the full project during class, but you’ll leave with the supplies, skills, and instructions needed to finish it at home.

This class is especially lovely for homeschool parents and others interested in teaching children to knit, but it is also perfect for anyone who would enjoy learning to knit through a warm and approachable Waldorf-inspired method.

Supplies

Each student will receive one ball of wool yarn and a pair of bamboo knitting needles to use during class and take home afterward. All necessary class supplies are included in the registration price.
