*All Ages Welcome | Free Community Event
Curious about fly tying? Join us for a special community evening with local fly tyer Alun Thomas, who will introduce the art of traditional fly tying and demonstrate how these tiny works of craft are made.
Fly tying is a fascinating blend of craft, tradition, and practical skill—using thread, feathers, fur, and careful technique to create fishing flies that are both functional and beautiful.
Alun began tying flies as a teenager in Wales in the 1970s. After taking a brief introductory class, he continued learning through books and magazines, eventually developing a deep interest in traditional Atlantic salmon and steelhead flies. After moving to Salt Lake City in 1995, he became involved in the local fly tying community and has continued tying flies for fishing, display, and for the joy of the craft itself—especially enjoying traditional patterns made with natural materials.
During this event, Alun will share a bit of fly tying history, show examples, and demonstrate his process live. If there is enough interest after this gathering, we hope to offer a full hands-on fly tying workshop in the near future.
Whether you’re an experienced fly fisher, a curious maker, or simply someone who loves learning old-world skills, we’d love to have you join us.
